Hawaiian cuisine, not unlike many other regional cuisines in the West, is comprised of a diverse amalgamation of foods and cooking methods brought to the island from other regions. While most traditional regional and ethnic cuisines rely heavily on animal ingredients, fruits and veggies are the cornerstone of Hawaiian cooking, namely pineapple, coconut, sweet potato, and sugar cane. That’s not to say meat and fish aren’t prominent in Hawaiian dishes – they are – but it’s easy enough to do without them while still enjoying the classic flavors of the tropical islands who do things a little differently than us mainlanders.
