Vegan Philly “Cheesesteak” w/ “Special Sauce” (Video)

For years we’ve been making this tangy sauce that we simply refer to as “special sauce.” It’s a great sauce because it’s easy to make and it tastes incredible on sandwiches, pizza, and just about anything that’s salty and savory. The sauce is so easy to make because it’s just a mixture of Sriracha, mustard, and vegan mayo. These are pretty typical condiments in our house, so it’s basically become our go-to sauce.

The Philly cheesesteak has been around since the early 20th century. Plenty of food bloggers and restaurants have already done a vegan version, so we wanted to make sure our version had something that really takes it over the top. The answer was obvious: smother it in “special sauce.” When combined with sautéed veggies, fresh scallions, and fresh baked French bread, this vegan Philly “cheesesteak” sandwich is unstoppable!

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook/Cool Time: 30 minutes

Total Time: 40 minutes

Yield: 2 Large Subs

Vegan Philly “Cheesesteak” w/ “Special Sauce” Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 package seitan, drained
  • 1/4 soy sauce
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 onion, sliced
  • 1/2 green pepper, sliced
  • 1/4 cup vegan mozzarella (we used Daiya)
  • 2 tbsp vegan mayonnaise (we prefer Vegenaise)
  • 2 tbsp sriracha
  • 2 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt, pepper, red pepper flakes
  • 1 green onion, chopped
  • 2 hoagie rolls (we used a french bread loaf and sliced it in half)

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 400º and heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
  2. Add seitan, soy sauce, and garlic to a medium bowl and set aside to marinate for 10 minutes.
  3. Once oil is heated, add onions, green pepper, and spices to the pan and stir. Sauté for approximately 10 min.
  4. Add seitan to the pan and sauté another 10 minutes.
  5. Fill hoagie rolls with seitan mixture and top with vegan mozzarella cheese.
  6. Bake for 10 minutes until bread is toasted and cheese is melted.
  7. Meanwhile, stir together vegan mayonnaise, sriracha, and mustard to make "special sauce."
  8. Once sandwiches are done baking, top with "special sauce" and green onions.
