What Does a Vegan Olympic Weightlifter Eat? You Might Be Surprised

Awhile back, Kendrick Farris, an olympic weightlifter spoke to The Huffington Post about why he became a vegan and what he eats while he’s training. His wife, and personal chef, Katrina gave the HuffPo a complete rundown of what she feeds Farris over the course of a typical day. I was kind of surprised by what she said. I was expecting to find out he eats several pounds of raw green vegetables and fruit, and that sort of stuff, but instead his diet is actually quite typical. In fact, it doesn’t look that much different from what I eat in a normal day.

The Meal Plan

Katrina said she prepares two to three meals per day for Kendrick, and that he also eats a couple snacks in between meals. She went on to say, “I use black beans for everything.” Katrina didn’t specify whether or not Kendrick has dessert, but she did say he’ll usually have one more protein shake before he goes to bed.

Breakfast

Oatmeal or pancakes.

Midday Snack

Vanilla or chocolate flavored plant-based protein shake.

Lunch

Avocado quesadillas.

Late Afternoon Snack

Guacamole and black bean chips.

Dinner

Black bean quesadillas.

Katrina didn’t give specific information about nutrients or portion sizes. It really doesn’t sound like that much food for a guy who can lift over 800 lb but apparently it’s working out pretty well for him. Kendrick seems to be quite content with his diet. He says he’s been vegan for two years and counting, and that he’s never felt better. Further proof that a plant-based day can power anyone.
