If you’ve ever heard the song “Down Under,” then you’ve heard of a “Vegemite sandwich,” but what exactly is Vegemite? Vegemite is a popular Australian spread made from brewer’s yeast, herbs and spices, which means Vegemite is vegan.
Vegemite vs. Marmite
You may have also heard of Marmite, which is similar to Vegemite. The two spreads are essentially the same thing – yeast extracts – with different brand names. Vegemite is the brand that’s common in Australia, whereas Marmite is more popular in New Zealand and the UK. To an Australian child, a Vegemite sandwich is basically the equivalent of a peanut butter sandwich to an American child. So you could say that comparing Vegemite to Marmite is sort of like comparing two brands of peanut butter that use slightly different recipes.
Vegemite Health Benefits
Australians were wise to make Vegemite a dietary staple, because it turns out yeast extract is really good for you. It’s an excellent source of B vitamins, and it also contains some protein and dietary fiber.
