Are cigarettes vegan?

If you’re a vegan smoker looking for a good reason to quit, today might be your lucky day. On the other hand, if you’re a vegan smoker with no intentions of quitting, get ready for some bad news…

About 99 percent of all cigarettes are not vegan. I know what you’re thinking… How can this be? Cigarettes are just tobacco and tobacco is just a plant! The problem is, most cigarettes these days are so much more than “just tobacco.”

Cigarettes are one of the few remaining products in the world to use an ingredient called, castoreum – a “natural flavoring” derived from the anal gland of beavers. Yep, that’s right… all these years you’ve been smoking beaver ass. Sort of. And I swear I am not making this up just to mess with you. I’m so dead serious here.

Castoreum has been used for many years as a “natural flavoring” in everything ranging from perfume to vanilla flavored yogurts, and it’s still used today as an additive in cigarettes. Now, that’s odd.

According to bloggers who diligently researched the matter, there are only two brands of cigarettes that do not contain castoreum: American Spirits and Winstons. No, this is not a commercial for either of those brands, nor is it an endorsement to smoke cigarettes. However, if you are addicted, you are probably not going to quit any time soon, so you might as well at least know which brands do the least harm  – not to you, but to other animals. Smoking vegan cigarettes will still totally kill you. Sorry.

We understand how hard it is to be a vegan. You have to consider different factors in almost every aspect. But do not worry, we’re here for you!
