Vegans are strict vegetarians who do not eat any foods that contain animal products, such as meat, milk, eggs, etc. Of course, this means ice cream is off the table. Well, ice cream is made from milk. Thankfully, there’s more than one way to skin a cat; or in this case, milk a cow. Figuratively speaking, of course. As it turns out, cow’s milk is not the only kind of milk that can be used to make ice cream. Let’s take a look at some of the other choices that are available for vegans.
Coconut Milk Ice Cream
This is my favorite type of ice cream. I like it even better than traditional ice cream. The flavor of coconut lends itself so well to ice cream. So Delicious is the brand that turned me on to coconut milk ice cream. I actually thought I was buying soymilk ice cream the first time I picked up a pint, until later when I got home and looked at the ingredients again. I’ve tried many flavors of coconut milk ice cream – everything from cookie dough to chocolate cherry – and they all have tasted great, without too much of the coconut flavor getting in the way.
Soy Ice Cream
Another alternative is soy ice cream. So Delicious also makes soy ice cream, but I don’t think it’s as good as their coconut milk ice cream. Another popular brand is Tofutti. I realize that “tofu” is not exactly the type of thing you want to associate with ice cream, but I highly recommend their Tofutti Cuties – a vegan ice cream sandwich that is indistinguishable from the real thing.
Almond Milk Ice Cream
If you have an ice cream maker, you can make your own almond milk ice cream. I’m a fan of almond milk in general, and I think almond milk ice cream is even better. I still don’t like it as much as coconut milk ice cream but I prefer it to soy ice cream. Bay Area Bites has three excellent almond milk ice cream recipes posted on their blog.
Sorbet
Lastly, there is sorbet. Sorbet is typically nothing more than a simple mixture of frozen water, fruit, and juice. Unlike ice cream, which requires an ice cream maker to make, all you need is a food processor to make your own sorbet. The website, Cooking Light, has a large selection of sorbet recipes – most of which are vegan.
