If you’ve spent any time reading this blog, you might have noticed we’re a little obsessed with pizza. For the past few weeks – or maybe months? – we’ve been making a pizza every Friday night. It’s become a ritual. We always make our pizza dough from scratch, and we also like to experiment with different sauces. Sometimes they work out, sometimes they don’t. Last Friday we experimented with a new creamy avocado sauce recipe, and it was a total winner!
We like vegan cheese, but sometimes we just want a cheese-less pizza. We also like tomato sauce, but that can get boring. So, we’ve been experimenting with creamy sauces that take the place of both. In addition to being pizza-holics, we’re also hooked on avocados, so naturally a ripe Hass avocado seemed like the perfect base for our sauce.
Ingredients
- 2 1/4 tsp yeast
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 1/2 cups AP flour
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 ripe Hass avocado
- 1 pkg firm tofu rinsed and drained
- 4 cloves fresh garlic
- 1 squirt fresh lemon juice
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1/2 tsp ground red pepper
- 1/2 tsp ground sage
- 1/2 tsp rosemary
Instructions
- Add yeast, sugar, and water to a large mixing bowl and stir. Let stand for 10 min to proof the yeast.
- Add the rest of the ingredients and stir with a wooden spoon or spatula until dough forms.
- Cover with a towel and place in a warm area for 30 to 60 min.
- Roll out dough with hands over a large greased pan or casserole dish. We used a 13" casserole.
- Bake at 550º F or hottest oven temperature for 15 to 20 minutes or until crust is medium brown and crispy.
- Place all ingredients in a food processor, and process on high for several minutes until the mixture is smooth and does not contain any big lumps.
Notes
Make the pizza dough before you make the sauce so you can give the dough some time to rise.
Depending on how much sauce you like, this recipe will make enough sauce to cover one to two 12 inch pizzas.
We always bake our pizza at the hottest temperature our oven can go to. At the moment, that's 550º F. We bake it at this temperature for about 15 min in a pan, and then another 5 min on the bare rack. If your oven doesn't get that hot, just let the pizza bake until the edges of the crust are golden brown.
We topped our pizza with marinated tofu, green peppers, onions, cherry tomatoes, and spinach.
