A New Zealand woman has found a way to make chicken from peas, similar to what Impossible Foods has done with faux beef. Shama Sukul-Lee is an entreprenuer who says one day she had “an existential crisis” that not only caused her to give up meat, but to also do her part to solve the world’s meat crisis by replicating the most consumed meat in the west from plants.
Sukul-Lee says her plant-based chicken really tastes, looks, and feels exactly like real chicken, and everyone who’s tried seems to agree. The only difference is a yellowish tint that is a natural side effect of the yellow peas used to make it. Sukul-Lee doesn’t mind the color, though, and insists she’d rather just accept it than use additives in her product to make it white like real chicken meat.
The product will be sold under the name, Sunfed Meats, and it’s poised to start popping up in supermarkets soon. Sukul-Lee says that after chicken, plant-based beef, pork, and fish will follow. Watch the video below to find out more.
