The World Health Organization – WHO – announced today that processed meats, such as bacon, sausage, hot dogs, and hamburgers are now listed as known carcinogens, right alongside cigarettes and asbestos. The WHO’s findings are based on numerous scientific studies that have linked processed meats and red meat to various forms of cancer, including colon cancer and stomach cancer.

The new investigation involved 22 scientists who were invited by the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer to assess the association between more than 16 types of cancer and the consumption of red meat and processed meat.
