“Don’t step on my blue suede shoes!” is what I’d be singing if suede was vegan. Alas, suede is far from vegan. It’s actually just leather that has been dyed and napped, which is just a fancy way of saying it’s been made pretty and fluffy. Suede is typically made from lambs’ skin, although cow, pig, goat, and deer skin are sometimes used, as well.
Before you get super-bummed because you just found out suede isn’t vegan, know that real suede has a lot of drawbacks. Sure, it looks cool and feels nice, but that’s about all it has going for it. Genuine suede is a bit pricy and water will flat-out ruin it. Just like regular leather, suede isn’t that practical when you compare it to its synthetic counterparts.
Suede Alternatives
You can find plenty of faux suede products online and in stores. Everything from boots and shoes to luggage and handbags. Whether you’re shopping for a suede jacket or even a suede laptop case, a synthetic alternative exists.
