You may have seen baba ghanoush on restaurant menus or in your local supermarket, but what is it exactly? Baba ghanoush is a traditional Levantine dish made from roasted eggplant, onions, tomatoes, olive oil, and seasonings. The ingredients are blended into a dip that is typically served as an appetizer with pita bread. Baba ghanoush is also often used as a filling in sandwiches and wraps.
Is baba ghanoush vegan? Yes!
Baba ghanoush in its classic form only contains plant-based ingredients. Even though there are many variations, most only consist of the core ingredients of eggplant, veggies, and spices; however, there is one exception: An Israeli version called salat ḥatzilim b’mayonnaise contains mayonnaise; but to the best of our knowledge that is the only non-vegan variation.
