We finally got around to writing our review for Hampton Creek’s Just Mayo. We know we’re way behind on this, but we figure better late than never. Just Mayo has been making headlines recently – both for its popularity and the controversy surrounding the warning letter from the FDA, and the American Egg Board’s not-so-secret agenda, but that’s a whole other story.
As you probably know, Just Mayo is not just mayo. Just Mayo is an eggless vegan mayonnaise alternative that looks and tastes a lot like real mayo. But that’s not to say it tastes just like real mayo. So far the product has received mostly positive reviews, and many vegans have said it’s their favorite vegan mayo. Although we do like Just Mayo, we don’t think it lives up to the hype.
The thing is, we’re longtime Vegenaise fans. Maybe we’ve just gotten used to the way Veganaise tastes, but we don’t think Just Mayo is as good. Just Mayo isn’t bad – it actually tastes pretty good – but it has this strong lemon flavor that dominates the spread. The consistency is great; it looks good and smells good; and it does have a flavor that resembles mayonnaise; but the lemon is just too intense. However, that may be why some people like it so much.
We’ll probably buy Just Mayo again since it’s widely available, and because we like it; but if given the choice between Veganaise or Just Mayo, we’d choose Veganaise.
